Tarpons grow to about 5–8 ft. long and weigh 80–280 lbs. Adults are strictly carnivorous and feed on midwater prey; they swallow their food whole and hunt nocturnally. This is the reason that most of Stu's recommended Tarpon Flies are not heavily weighted. They have very bony mouths and a good solid strip strike is needed to get a solid hook up. Smaller sized streamer, shrimp and worm style flies are recommended even for the big tarpon.
