I caught this shoplifter with a magnet up his sleeve ! at the fly display all the way from Scotland!

 THE DANGERS OF FISHING!

A few weeks ago i had the pleasure of guiding two lovely Scottish guys, the day was fun ,the patter was good, trout were lost and caught !  A week later the guys arrived back at the shop with tales of sexy trout! But when Marcus lifted his glasses up , and showed me the pretty bad cut above his eye and his swollen black eye i was a little shocked! OK- well as soon as i realized he was not dying - i pissed myself laughing and asked him to model for me!!

So what happen on that fate full day!! - The two of them were having fun fishing and spotting trout, While  focused on a big trout feeding midstream Marcus quite simply slipped off the rock he was standing on and head butted another rock! Lucky he stayed conscious and Derek was there to help him get to hospital for his 16 stitches. This may be a warning to others anything can happen when your out there, so its always best to fish with another or if your on your own take a locator beacon and tell others where you will be going!

Clear water in every river and the fish are on the chew! for December! This nice brown was hooked on my 4wgt on my brown beetle  on Sunday morning.

I have just finished a hectic two weeks of guiding and teaching and it was awesome to be able to assist others in there quest to become more efficient anglers. The fist chance i had i was out for a quick fishvery  very early on sunday morning before opening the shop.

I went on a mission to a spot, i thought some nice trout would be in residence and sure enough they were.

I caught a couple on brown beetles and then i switched to my water beetle in a backwater.

In the evening and early morning the trout are gorging on brown beetles!

casting it in-front of cruising fish and watching them inhale the offering so fast, to hook them i had to be on my game.

The best laugh though, was i had taken my santa props with me  and was stalking fish with my tinsel decorations round my neck and santa hat on .

When three other camouflaged fishermen appeared out the bushes and thought they were seeing things!!

Probably the best trout fishing book thats been published in a long time!

 The Trout Diaries- the book!

Derek Grzelewski has been popping into my shop for years on his quest to catch fish or not! A few years ago he told me he had a plan to write a book on a year of fly fishing in new Zealand. I don't think  he ever actually realized what he would accomplish!  From many people i have talked to that have read the book and reviews in Magazines , he has unknowingly tapped into the heart of every fly fisher. What more can i say !  Buy  it,read it and enjoy! Be warned the publisher now wants more of his work!

Check out the Deadly Nz blowfly new pattern as seen above on my web site.

These Sky rats, have great wing feathers for wee wet and may fly dries

STARLINGS IN THE WADER AN BOOT SHED!

Starlings we also know as sky rats, They are real pests when they are nesting ad if there is a place they can squeeze into they will make there nests.

I went to get my client some waders and boots from my not so well made wader shed and i could not believe the amount of straw that was in there, basically about enough to fill a black bin bag! and there was bird poo all over the waders and boots .

Action was needed, So i went round to my neighbors home who had borrowed  my air gun for their own starling problem and soon i put an end to my problems.

The wings of these pests are great for wee dries and wet flies and as i did not need any more fly tying materials , so i gave them to a new ,young budding fly tier i know, which made his day.

Summer is coming and the ground works are starting to come together !

14lb NZ brown!!   Gordy Watson, one of the regular guides who stops at my shop and buys his flies from me knows how important good hooks are when his client catches the fish of a life time on a size.

Just recently he guided a client onto a huge 14lb brown trout ,that was  18 nz brown may fly bomb

in

from small gin clear river system .Gordy said it was amazing to watch such a big fish tail  walking in the pool.To be honest it has to be the largest brown trout i have seen caught in recent years and not on a full blown mouse year.

GOOD HOOKS!   As  you all know i use only the best Tiemco fly hooks on my designs, each design has had a specific hook allocated to each design. Some are on very fine wire hooks to help them float better, and others are on heavier wire hooks .

Some people do not realize that it you are using heavy tippet 5lb and above and are in fast water and hook heavy strong fish.

That  even the best hooks in the world may not take that pressure , so what you have to do is if you are in different situation ,choose the fly and think about the gauge(thickness of the hook)for light work and delicate presentations use light wire strong hooks and for heavier work use heavier gauge hooks.

Think about this when selecting flies or buying fly tying hooks and you will have more fun!

Have a fun Christmas with all your loved ones Cheers STU
